There are some genuine nice people who are always happy to help me chasing my dream. The best part is that I get to pick and choose products that I truly believe in. Support them when you can!
I'm very grateful to have support from a local bike shop. Mike and Jo Anderson and their team at Avantiplus Richmond have a wealth of experience when it comes to bikes. They offer a wide range of quality cycling brands, customized bike-fit and have the knowledge to sort out your bike- newbie or elite. Most important they are bunch of passionate and friendly guys.
Awaken energy bars are made from organic dried fruits, nuts and seeds with a surprisingly high amount of protein. They are the only energy bar in New Zealand that is raw, vegan, organic and environmentally friendly. Most importantly they taste great and are easy to eat on the move. They are my favourite food during training, endurance racing or just snacking during the day. The only problem is that my team mates keep stealing them from me during adventure races.
I struggeled for years to find a sports drink that my body can cope with- especially during high intensity racing. When I discovered Pure Sports Hydration drinks I was instantly sold. Made from real fruit these sports drinks have no artificial colours and flavours. Cross country racing is about as hard on your stomach as you can get. I 'm using these during every race and never had any gastric discomfort.
I have used Chia seeds in my smoothies and meals for a number of years. They are perfect for athelets as they are packed with protein, fibre, omega -3 fatty acids, antioxidants, calcium, iron, manganese and phosphorous. Grown in South America these seeds have been prized for hundreds of years and they were even used as a currency. This makes Chia a super convenient and tasty drink after exercise, for recovery or just as a pick-me up during the day.
I love the breads and crackers from The Breadman. I buy two loafs a week and it’s the only bread I will eat because it’s the best-tasting, gluten-free bread you can buy. I especially like the corn and buckwheat (gluten-free) and rye sourdough bread. The corn crackers with fresh avocado are mouth watering! I also like that it is GMO-free, organic and of course, vegan.
As much as I love being outside training, gym work is equally important to improve performance and, more importantly, your overall health. What convinced me about Migym is there friendly atmosphere and qualified staff with experience in all areas of coaching. Being owned by Adventurer Racers Rachael and Trevor Voyce sold it to me!
The Nelson Mountain Bike Club is doing a fantastic job in building and maintaining trails as well as making areas accessible to the public. I feel incredibly lucky to have such an extensive network and diversity of trails 5 minutes away from home / work / town. Without their financial support and multiple events things would be a lot harder for me.
I highly recommend Chris Mildon and his team at MTB Skills Clinic to any rider out there! The courses are well structured and the highly trained instructors will help you to get the most out of your riding- being safer and more confident or going faster and higher. You can choose between public group clinics or private group session with your friends.
A good physio is worth their weight in gold. I first went to Sports Therapy with a persisting, niggling ankle injury and Phil got me back running within two session. Now, whenever I have a problem or some tight muscles need attention, I head to Sports Therapy because I trust they give me the best treatment and the shortest recovery time.
I used Thermatech gear for the first time 3 years ago on our way to winning the Spring Challenge 10 hour race in Queenstown. The merino long-sleeve and merino hat kept us warm and well insulated all day in the wet and cold conditions. I really like the long-lasting quality of the tops and jackets and the fact that they are still produced right here in New Zealand.
Absolute Black produces light and durable bicycle parts that look as good as they perform. I started using their oval chainrings a year ago. The first time I tried them was in a 24hour race. At first it felt slightly awkward but after only a few hours on the bike my stroke got much smoother without any 'dead' spots. The grooves of the narrow-wide chainrings are well engineered and as a result I have never dropped my chain on my 1x system.
Blackcurrants are the only fruit that have never liked right from when I was a kid. But Sujon Blackcurrant Powder has changed my mind. I tried the powder for the first time 3 months ago as it was recommended by my coach to boost my recovery and aerobic fitness. I haven’t looked back since. I use a heaped teaspoon of Sujon Blackcurrant Powder every morning in my breakfast smoothie and again in my recovery shake after a hard training session. It provides me with a boost of vitamin C, vitamin A and iron (which is particularly important as a vegan) and I love the unique berry flavor it adds to my smoothies!
Pic's Really Good Peanut Butter is my go-to peanut butter every time. It contains peanuts (surprise!) and nothing else - just like every product should do. It is made locally in sunny Nelson (N.Z.) and tastes fantastic. I even converted some non-peanut-butter-eating Germans into addicts! I am also super excited about their newest additions: almond butter and cashew butter. These are full of nutrients, unsaturated oils and vitamins and make a fantastic snack throughout the day.
