The German National Champs were held in a tiny place called Wombach am Main, located right in the middle of Germany. We were surprised to find a good mix of quality built and natural trails during our first practice laps.
Found some cool trails during practice
Even Josh had a section named after him...
The line up was impressive and included 6 professional World Cup riders. The field was spearheaded by Germany's most successful rider ever, Sabine Spitz. In such a quality field, I was aiming for a top 10 (maybe a top 8).
Caught on the back foot at the start
As expected the start was fast and furious and a lead group of six girls was established very quickly. I decided to pace myself at the start so I can get into my own rhythm right from the beginning. This saw me leading the second group of riders after the start loop.
Leading the other girls on the start loop
Over the next couple of laps I pulled away from the rest of my group and kept the two girls ahead of me in sight. But I was not able to catch them (apart from a slower rider who was lapped). At the same time the distance to the girls behind me increased from lap to lap
and I had to ride some 'lonely' laps constantly trying to push myself as hard as I can.
Passing a lapped rider and enjoying the trails
I finished in 7th place behind the six professional World Cup riders and was super happy! Not a bad result for my first German Champs.
Sabine Spitz took her 13(!) German Title, respect!
'Nice' surprise after the finish - doping control. That was a first, too.
